We ended last week with our reading of the poem "The Tyger" by William Blake. And you were asked to consider the following questions:
  • Do you believe that a creation is a reflection of the creator?
  • Can a good person create something evil?

We will continue our analysis of "The Tyger" this week so that we can make connections to our reading of Lord of the Flies. William Blake wonders - Who could create such an awesome animal as the tiger? The boys will continue to wonder - What is this beast on the island? You will be asked this week to make the connection between the two in a second comparative essay.

Other things to look forward to is our first Scholastic Book Fair and our first student-led conference on Thursday. Stay on top of your studies, your writing, and your reading everyone!

Assignments that will need to be completed at home this week are:
  • LOTF 6 Handout, Due Weds., 10/19
  • "The Tyger" Handout, Due Tues., 10/18
  • Bring parents to Student-Led Conferences, On Thursday, 10/20

Week 9

It's week 9 of school - I'm always surprised by how quickly the semester moves forward. It's a busy week for me as I will be grading many of your comparative essays and any assignments you are turning in or making up. Thank you students and parents in advance for your patience.

I want to just repeat that deadlines are really, really important but what is equally important to me and many of the teachers at Luther Burbank is that you master what we're learning. You have multiple chances to demonstrate that you are meeting learning targets:

  • You can retake tests.
  • You can complete assignments that you didn't understand or missed due to absences or other reasons.
  • You can revise and rewrite until you finally achieve a complete and thoughtful essay.

For the Week 10 report card, I am grading everything that has been turned in to me today during school and tonight online. The report card you receive for Week 10 will reflect this.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to e-mail me.

The assignments that need to be finished at home this week are:
  • Final Draft of Comparative Essay, Due 10/10 by 9pm on classroom.google.com
  • Chapter 3-6 Vocabulary Handout, Due Thurs., 10/13 in class

This week we will continue to read Lord of the Flies and consider the following questions:

- What do we need to survive physically?
- What do we need to survive mentally?

As the boys struggle to survive on this island they will grapple with these two questions and the challenges of working together as a group.

The assignments you need to finish at home this week are:

- Rough Draft of Comparative Essay, Due Thurs., 10/6
